Keepin’ Up with the Capriccios - A Smol Dog Blog
Day 9: Accountability & Reputation
In my opinion, both terms relate to how breeders interact with external parties: other people (puppy people, breeding partners, stud owners) and also their dogs (puppies, show dogs, retired dogs, pets).
Day 8: Progesterone Result #1
Pearl’s first test, done on Wednesday (day 7 of her heat cycle), came back at 8.1 nmol/L - which is almost the exact same concentration it was for her first litter (in fall 2020) on the same day!
Day 5: Evaluating the Girl
When I evaluate Pearl (or any dog) for breeding, I follow a checklist to go over the following aspects: Health Testing, Genetic Testing, Temperament, Structure, Pedigree, and Titles/Workability.
Day 4 “Your breeder should be able to explain every breeding.”
IF YOUR BREEDER can’t tell you why they put a stud and a dam together (e.g. I wanted to improve / I wanted to preserve / I wanted to correct (dog)’s (property/quality)) - please avoid them. A good breeder will put time, effort, and a lot of thought into each and every breeding - some more than others.
Day 2: Progesterone in a Nutshell
Progesterone is a hormone that has a significant role in starting, maintaining, and terminating pregnancy (hopefully with the birth of live offspring). Breeders will run progesterone tests at the beginning of a dam’s heat cycle to figure out when she is fertile and ready to be bred.

Follow-up: “5 Things Not to Say to your Breeder” Reel
A written follow-up to the reel titled “5 Things Not to Say to a Pembroke Welsh Corgi Breeder” on Instagram! I know there were a lot of questions and people asking for clarification on certain points (there’s only so much that can be covered in 60s!) - so here we are.
“I don’t need a show dog, I just want a pet!”
We've all seen someone say this at least once in their search for their furry family friend. There’s this general misconception that whether a dog is shown or not has nothing to do with its ability to be a wonderful companion.
