What makes a breeder reputable or responsible?

Responsible breeders must obey codes of ethics and codes of conduct as laid out by a) their respective kennel club(s), and b) by their respective breed clubs - to treat their dogs properly, to have the correct guiding principles when breeding, and to avoid propagating disease (as much as possible) in their bred dogs.

It’s not as simple as putting a male and a female dog together - choosing which dogs to put together is a difficult and time-consuming process, with breeders considering everything imaginable (e.g. litter sizes, fertility, conformation, temperament, genetic outcomes, litter consistency, previous unrecorded health issues, pedigree and related dogs, age of the dam/sire, and much more!)

  • The PWC breed standard describes the breed as: “Intelligent, charming and affectionate in nature, the Pembroke is alert and vigilant but kindly.”

Pems are generally bold, curious, and never excessively shy nor vicious.

  • Pembroke Welsh Corgis should be tested for the following types of illnesses:

    vWD1 [von Willebrand’s Disease Type 1]

DM [Degenerative Myelopathy] <— contentious topic

    HD [Hip Dysplasia]

    PPM [Persistent Pupillary Membrane]

Additional resources on each of these disorders can be found in my “Education/Learning” section of my website.
